The special benefits of immersing in the Jordan River first became known during the days of Prophet Elijah's disciple Elisha, and even more so since John baptized Jesus in the Jordan. These waters have been known for centuries as a highlight of Holy Land pilgrimage. Here, in the southing shade of eucalyptus trees, both comfort and inspiration can be found. This is why the site of Yarsenit, near the exit point of the Jordan River from the Sea of Galilee is such a popular baptism site.
Some traditions believe this to be the actual site where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13: "Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John"). Many Christian pilgrims stop at this site and perform baptism ceremonies, normally in small groups and accompanied by the group's pastor. It is a remarkable and charming site - and should not be missed.
