This synagogue was built as a Beit Midrash and is said to have been tile study hall of Rabbi Yosef Caro, author of the Shulchan Aruch, one of the most important interpretations of Jewish law. The building was destroyed in the 1837 earthquake but was restored by Yitzhak Guetta, together with three other Safed synagogues.
