The El-Jazzar mosque is Akko's main mosque and one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in Israel. It was built by Ahmed el-Jazzar in 1781 on the model of the Ottoman domed mosques. It has remarkable pillars made of marble and granite that were brought from Tsor and Caesarea.
The courtyard of the mosque is entered by a flight of steps, on the right of which is a small Rococo kiosk. The rooms around the courtyard once provided accommodation for pilgrims and Islamic ecclesiastics. In the arcaded gallery on the east side are steps leading down to a cistern believed to be built at the Crusaders' time. It was used as water source for the city population when the town was besieged.
