Safed is most famous for being one of the Four Holy Cities in Judaism, along with Jerusalem, Tiberias and Hebron. It is also a health and holiday resort with pleasant summers and snowy winters thanks to itshigh altitude of more than 900 meters.
The city is divided into quarters, the most famous being the Artists' Quarter where many galleries and art shops offer unique works to the city's visitors. The Old Town area is filled with a romantic flavor of narrow cobblestone lanes and ancient synagogues. The rusty old houses with their domed roofs give the city the atmosphere and mystery of the past of the Holy Land.
Safed's city center is friendly and attractive with its pedestrian shopping street, Jerusalem Street (Rehov Yerushalayim).
