Just off the south end of Jerusalem Street is the artists' quarter. Though artists were drawn to Safed and its mystical atmosphere long before the Artists' Quarter was established, today in its low houses, huddled closely together, live some sixty painters and sculptors. Many of them have their own galleries, and the former mosque serves as a showroom for them all.
Today the Artists' Quarter attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world, who come here to wander around the cobblestone alleys and to visit the artists in their studios and galleries.
