This excavated village was once a major metropolis populated by 40,000 rabbis, Romans, and Hellenized Jews. The site exhibits the uncovered synagogue, Roman Theater, mansion, a water reservoir, burial caves, the remains of a crusader fortress and shopping boulevard. It also reveals one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient floor mosaics, including the “Mona Lisa of the Galilee,” a tiled image of a woman who seems to be looking at guests no matter where they are positioned.
