The city of Beit Shean, located near the Sea of Galilee, is the home of the best-preserved Roman/Byzantine city in Israel. Its natural advantages of good rain fall, streams, fertile land, natural valleys providing the best east-west crossing in the country and proximity to trade routes have contributed to its almost continuous occupation for nearly 6,000 years. Beit Shean is the biblical city where the bodies of Saul and Jonathan were hung after they were decapitated. During the time of Jesus it was known as Scythopolis.
